ABOUT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY
Biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST) uses gentle, precise touch to bring about ease and balance in the biological systems of the body—such as the nervous system, the circulatory system, and the myofascial system. When these systems are in balance and at ease, the body instinctively begins to reorganise and make shifts towards greater health.
Sometimes, shifts are straightforward and symptom-specific. For example, a craniosacral treatment can facilitate the release of tension in a tight shoulder; accelerate healing after an injury; or, bring relief from chronic pain, insomnia or anxiety.
At other times, shifts are more subtle and holistic. For example, a treatment can lead to an experience of greater resilience , clarity or purpose in daily life; or bring about the resolution of traumatic imprints or persistent patterns. In this respect, BCST offers many of the same transformative possibilities as working with a skilled counsellor, coach or analyst.
Biodynamic craniosacral therapy was originally practiced as a sub-specialty of osteopathy, but is now established as its own discipline, regulated by the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America. The word "biodynamic" refers to an emphasis on empowering the body's bio-intelligence and the client's self-agency, rather than on diagnostics or corrective methods.
Beyond its foundations in osteopathy, BCST is notably informed by the study of embryology—how biological systems grow and develop in utero provides a blueprint for how they can be healed later in life—and insights from many allied disciplines; for example: somatic experiencing, and pre- and peri-natal therapy.
